FREEPORT (WREX) — One local sheriff will not be pursuing re-election this fall.
Stephenson County Sheriff David Snyders released a statement Thursday announcing that he will not seek re-election for a new term.
Snyders has served in law enforcement for more than four decades. He was first elected as Stephenson County Sheriff in 1998.
Sheriff Snyders says he has made numerous friendships over the years and praised his staff for their hard work.
"The decision to retire was not an easy one because serving the citizens of Stephenson County has been both an honor and a privilege," Snyders says. "It is now time for me to consider my options to serve others in new ways."
A new sheriff will be elected in November.
