If you're looking for a place to stay warm, SecondFirst Church will serve as a warm center until March of this year. What it is doing to welcome everyone.

ROCKFORD (WREX) — It's the opening week for Overnight Café at SecondFirst Church in the Stateline.

If you have nowhere to go tonight, coming here may save you and your family's lives.

"We open one well lit space for anybody that needs to come in from out of the cold," said Rebecca White Newgren, pastor at SecondFirst.

And for those that don't think they need a shelter during this time, think again. Pastor Rebecca White Newgren says don't risk it.

"It's dangerously cold out there," said White Newgren. "So we really hope that everybody comes in."

Stateline doctors even advise that your best bet when it comes to staying safe is to find your closest warming center.

"So what can happen is your blood can actually freeze," said Dr. Martine Schultheis, family physician at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. "That can lead to damages to specifically your lungs and your skin."

And it only takes minutes before the damage is done.

"It's important to not stay outside for too long because even in ten minutes, you can have severe injuries," said Schultheis.

But you can prevent injuries by staying inside such as at places like SecondFirst Church, where it provides warmth and comfort.

"When people come in they can warm up, have hot drinks, and a warm meal," said White Newgren. "We have warm showers and laundry and lots of warm blankets, gloves, cozy things for people to wear so that they are most comfortable here."

Welcoming all with open and warm arms.

Overnight Café encourages anyone from the public to donate so it can provide for those that need a home. It is looking for meals, sleeping bags, socks, and underwear in all sizes.
