ROCKFORD (WREX) — Residents at Bickford of Rockford assisted living home have been busy and it's all to honor veterans here in Rockford.
Cards, cards, and more cards filled table. Over a hundred strong created with love and care.
The goal, to honor, remember, and celebrate veterans who have given their all to serve the country.
One woman inspired her fellow peers at the facility to come together in order to give back to those who served.
The name of this woman is Deanna Hartenberg, who is a current resident at Bickford of Rockford and former community educator.
Hartenberg spearheaded the project at Bickford and says the inspiration to do this project came from her love for community service and the military.
"And for nothing else it's for the veteran I had," Hartenberg said. "He was very special to me and that's perhaps how I got the veterans in my head."
Community service was also a driving factor behind this project. It has always been near and dear to Hartenberg's heart.
"I love doing projects for the community," Hartenberg said. "I came to Rockford as a community educator at Rockford West High School, so it's kind of in my blood."
Seniors used stickers, scissors, glue, and construction paper to make these cards unique.
The hope is that the cards can bring a smile to the veterans who receive them.
"I think they'll have a special spot because they were made by seniors," said Hartenberg. "Most of them who have had perhaps family in the war."
The cards will be sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs across the street from the living home on Veterans Day. They will then be given out to the veterans who arrive there.
