ROCKFORD (WREX) -- An Illinois agency received a quarter of a million dollars to help nonprofits across the state.

The $250,000 grant will help the Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence (NICNE) to continue building up 81Thrive.

The initiative began as a COVID-19 response and is credited with stabilizing 7 local philanthropic organizations jeopardized by the pandemic.

State Senator Steve Stadelman helped secure the funding and said nonprofits are a vital role in our community.

"While it's been difficult and the demand for their services has increased their ability to maintain staffing and resources has been even more difficult and so I think that's why this money is even more important for groups like that," State Senator, Steve Stadelman said.

The grant will help strengthen 100 nonprofit groups.
