ROCKFORD (WREX) -- The iconic and vacant Midway Theater in Rockford is up for sale and the owner faces steep fines for code violations.
Real estate records show the property up for sale for $475,000. The building has sat vacant and damaged for years. The roof collapsed in 2013.
Owner Peter Crane vowed to restore it to its former glory, but now says he's only been able to do some basic maintenance.
In January 2019, the City of Rockford filed a court order to bring the iconic downtown building up to code. At the time, the city said the goal was to stop further deterioration of the 100-year-old building.
A code hearing happened last week, the city says Crane did nto show up for it and was fined $184,500 for code violations.
