ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Winnebago County Health Department is updating their masking recommendations.

The WCHD says people in Winnebago County should "increase their level of respiratory protection," by wearing masks with stronger filters. The new recommendations come as the Omicron variant becomes the dominant variant of COVID-19 in the county.

According to the Winnebago County Health Department, N95 or similar masks provide the best protection. WCHD also says layering a cloth mask over a surgical mask also increases protection.
