Sheri’s Place celebrates 30 years in business this September

ROCKFORD (WREX) — For nearly 30 years, Sheri's Place has been serving up breakfast and lunch, but the food isn't the only thing that has customers coming back.

When you walk in, you're not just a patron anymore, you're a part of the family.

"We have met so many amazing people that have really become apart of our family and have adopted us," says co-owner Sheri Cannell.

"We've had families that come in here with two kids in high chairs, and now they're bringing their children in."

The family owned and operated joint prides itself of making sure customers fit right now with the Cannell's own family dynamic.

"My kids all work here, my grandkids all work here," says Cannell, "they have just been wrapped in so many hugs over the years. It's just awesome, the people are amazing."

Cannell and her husband Tom opened Sheri's Place on September 1, 1991. Tom had worked in the restaurant industry for years and wanted to open up a place of their own.

"My dad came up with the idea that we should have, 'Sheri's Place,' because the women names always sell more food than men."

Over the years, they have changed their menu here and there, but nothing dramatic until Covid-19. Cannell says it was the hardest trial the business has faced, but they pulled through thanks to the unwavering support of customers.

"So many people have been kind to us and so many people have embraced us in the hard times and the good times."

"Truly through the grace of God have we made it through Covid and that we're still here," says Cannell.

For Cannell, faith and family are the two most important things in her life.

That shines through at Sheri's Place.

So much so, the restaurant and her church, Grace Lutheran, have teamed up to donate sack lunches to the Rockford Rescue Mission on Sundays. Congregation member gather on Saturdays at the restaurant to pack them, then their pastor delivers them the next day.

"People that have been in here eating are like, 'what are you doing,' seeing people make lunches in the back," says Cannell, "they'll say they want to help then walk in the next day with a bag of chips. Its amazing how people's hearts continue to give."

"You know, the bottom line is God has walked every step with us."

Sheri's Place is open from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and is located at 5859 Forest Hills Road.
