Rockford Teens and Police Participate in Youth Police Camp
ROCKFORD (WREX) -
Summer camp is a great activity for kids, but not everyone can afford it. That's where a special police camp comes in.
20 Rockford teens get to spend a week at the Team Illinois Youth Police Camp in Bourbonnais for free. The Rockford Police, Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, and Illinois State Police are just some agencies taking part. Kids learn a variety of things from CPR to military drills.
"How to combat those societal pressures so they make good choices and be a positive member in society," Illinois State Police Sgt. Janet Reffett said. "And so it does, it means a lot to us because we learn a lot with what's going on with them that maybe we wouldn't know if we didn't have a chance to build that rapport."
Local sponsors made the camp possible this year for the teens.
