New details are emerging about the investigation into a former Beloit Police officer who faces charges of sexual assault of a minor.
On Saturday, Beloit Police arrested 62-year-old Larry Woods, after a child's mother alerted authorities to the alleged crime.
At a news conference on Tuesday, police revealed the victim was a 14-year-old girl.
Beloit Police Chief David Zibolski also said the investigation showed that the assaults had been going on for roughly a year.
"To this point the investigation is more than an allegation," Zibolski said. "I think we have seen enough corroboration of the information that has been obtained from the victim to lead us to this point."
Woods retired from the Beloit Police Department back in 2007 and had been working as a security guard at the Beloit Public Library and the Beloit School District.
Police said it is not clear where or how the assaults started.
According to the Beloit Public Library, Woods is on paid administrative leave until an internal investigation can be completed.
13 News also reached out to the School District of Beloit. It said it did not know about the allegation until the arrest on Saturday. It also issued the following statement...
The School District of Beloit learned this weekend about the arrest of security officer, Larry Woods. The School District of Beloit offers the Beloit Police Department full cooperation in this investigation as the safety of our students is a top priority. Security officers are not year-round employees. Therefore, Woods is not currently on duty in a school. The School District of Beloit administration was not aware of this matter until after it was reported to the Beloit Police Department on Saturday as it was not reported to school personnel.
It is important for students and families to know that the school district does not tolerate sexual harassment or assault. The relationship between personnel and students must remain positive and supportive at all times. Students and staff are encouraged to come forward and report incidents such as this to the administration. Each case will be handled swiftly with the attention and discretion it deserves.
Meanwhile, Woods is being held at the Dane County Jail and some who knew him in the community say they're shocked to see him there.
"He was always a nice guy," Beloit resident Jasin Davisson said. "I knew him for over 25 years and I was just really surprised to see he was arrested."
At this point, the Beloit Police Department is handling the investigation, despite Woods' 25 years of service on the force.
Zibolski said the FBI could take over if there is evidence the relationship crossed state lines.
