Confirmed case of Tuberculosis found at Belvidere North High School

There has been a confirmed case of Tuberculosis at Belvidere North High School, according to a letter sent by the Belvidere School District 100 and the Boone County Health Department.

Two letters were sent out to parents. One was a general letter notifying everyone in the district of the case. The second letter was sent to parents whose children may have been exposed to the person diagnosed with Tuberculosis, the district says.

Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that is transmitted from person to person through the air. People who come in to direct contact or share the same airspace can become infected, although the health department says it's extremely difficult to contract and can be treated. Symptoms include coughing, chest pain, fatigue, fever, night sweats, chills and a loss of appetite. If not treated, TB can be deadly and difficult to treat.

The letter recommends students who came in to contact with the infected patient to receive a TB skin test at the Boone County Health Department. Tests can be done on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1204 Logan Ave. You can make an appointment by calling 815-544-9730.

13 News has reached out to the district, who says it can not provide more information because of HIPPA laws.
