With Deion McShane leading the way, the Freeport boys track and field team won the 2-A Richmond-Burton Sectional title Wednesday night, as the Pretzels look to defend their state championship.
McShane helped Freeport score 39 of its 84 points, as the senior finished first in the long jump, the 110M and 300M hurdles, and second in the 200M dash. He also helped the 4x400M relay team earn one point with a sixth place finish.
Jaden Johnson also qualified for state in both hurdle events and the 4x100M relay team that finished second at Sectionals, punching a ticket to state. Pretzel pole vaulter Collin Heidenreich is heading to state after finishing second at Sectionals, with Belvidere's Austin Hausen also hitting the state qualifying height. Freeport high jumper Paris O'Bryant tied for second place, clearing 5'11" to earn seven points for his team.
Belvidere had a couple of other field athletes punch a ticket to state, with Kalen Murray winning the triple jump and Jake Peterson finishing second in discus.
Byron's 4x800M relay team is heading to state, with Colton Johnson, Will Carlson, Ethan Kirk and Luke Chernick finishing in 8:14.08. Chernick also qualified in the 800M run, finishing second behind Belvidere's J.R. Taylor.
Boylan and Freeport finished 1-2 in the 4x100M relay, with Boylan's Luca Dal Santo, Dayvion Foreman, Josh Petalber and Eric Konitski powering the Titans to victory. Konitski also qualified in the 400M run, winning that event.
North Boone's Blake Walters won the 1600M run, setting a personal record with a time of 4:33.43 to bring home the Sectional title.
Freeport finished first overall with 84 points, followed by Marengo with 75 and Belvidere with 63.5
