Summer-like heat stays in place

Posted: Updated:

The weather over the rest of the week provides another preview of summer weather with several days in a row in the 80's. We'll likely see at least the average amount of days May gets in the 80's by the end of the week.

Get ready to welcome in some summer-like warmth for the next few days. High temperatures for the next 4 days will climb into the lower 80's.

For today, high temps will soar to near 82° into the afternoon, with mostly sunny skies. The overnight will be cool with temperatures falling into upper 50's. Dew points will be lower, so the air won't feel too humid.

The warmth will continue into the weekend. The clouds will be on the increase into Saturday evening after temperatures reach into the 80's. The next wet weather system moves into the area late Saturday into Sunday, with slightly cooler high temps for Sunday into the start of the work-week.

The month of May averages 7 days in the 80's, scattered throughout the month. This particular May has had 4 days in the 80's so far. Starting Wednesday and lasting through Saturday, temperatures should reach the low 80's for 4 days in a row. That brings the tally of 80 degree days for Rockford this May to 8, with a little under a half of the month still left.

Humidity levels should stay within the comfortable range, so muggy conditions won't be in the mix the rest of this week.

Recently, the trend has been to have double digit days in the 80's in May. 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 all had 11+ days in the 80's, with 2012 having the most at 13 days. That's nearly double the average amount of 80 degree days.

The overall weather pattern looks to stay warmer than average this month, with plenty of southerly air flow keeping the heat around. Looking ahead to the summer, the 3 month span of June, July, and August looks to be near average overall.
