The Rockford Police Department honor guard was the first group of officers called Monday afternoon to stand watch over the wreath honoring fallen officers at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC.
"It's important for us, it's important for Jaimie, it's important for Jaimie's family," said Lt. Joel Givens, who has been on the honor guard for nearly 20 years. "I couldn't be prouder of our honor guard. They are very professional. And again, it's kind of humbling that we are allowed to be a part of a huge national memorial like this.
Three hundred different honor guard departments will stand watch over the wreath for the next 48 hours, making sure that symbol of their fallen brothers and sisters is never alone.
The Rockford honor guard stood at attention in the middle of the memorial, fulfilling one of their many duties here in Washington DC for this National Police Week.
