Hononegah hurdler headed to state after setting school record

Hononegah junior hurdler Honesty Sandlin set a school record in the 300M hurdles at last week's 3-A DeKalb Sectional, winning the event and qualifying for state. This is the first time Sandlin has qualified for state in an individual event, after qualifying with some relay teams in previous years.

"I'm really happy about it because I've been working on the 300 hurdles since freshman year," Sandlin said. "I was supposed to go last year. I was like one-tenth of a second off."

Sandlin put in lots of work in the offseason to improve her time and make sure she would not feel that disappointment again. Her time of 45.27 seconds is a Hononegah record, and was the sixth fastest time in the event among 3-A Sectionals around the state.

"It makes me really happy I'll have my name up at school," Sandlin said of breaking the Lady Indian record. "Just to break something like that was really hard. It's really good to make my own history for Hononegah."

The girls 3-A state meet prelims are Friday, with the finals on Saturday.
