15th Annual Red Shoe Run brings in hundreds to Rockford

The 15th annual Red Shoe Run took place this morning outside the campus of Northern Illinois University-Rockford. There was both a 5K run and a fitness walk for members of the community to participate in. Although the weather was not ideal for an outdoor event, organizers say they had a great turn out.

Hundreds of runners packed on the layers as they hit the course, all while running for a good cause. Organizers say the run is meant to help raise awareness for the need of organ, tissue, eye, blood, and bone marrow donations. A lot of the runners and walkers in attendance have been impacted in some way by donation.

"This event continues to grow and sustain itself and people tell us all the time they enjoy the message and that they think we are providing some good. That makes us really happy and makes it seem all worth while," Rock River Blood Center marketing manager, Jennifer Bowman said.

Organizers say a majority of the funds raised by this event are through admission fees for the race. They say they are pleased with the turn out of this years event, even with the wet weather.
