Rockford Christian breaks ground on new residence hall, fitness and art centers

Rockford Christian Schools is one step closer to having a dorm on its campus.

"It becomes a little bit more real," Rockford Christian Middle and High School President Drew Popejoy said about the groundbreaking. "Of course the ground officially got broken a few weeks ago when it was still pretty cold and seeing that first shovel going into the ground it was like yes this is happening."

The school broke ground Friday on what will be a residence hall, fitness and recreation facility and a center for the arts. The residence hall will have 200 beds to house students from around the world. Area leaders say this expansion is a win for students and the community.

"We need these young people to get educated and then come back here to be leaders in the future when they finish up college," Winnebago County Board Chairman Frank Haney said.

The center for arts and indoor fitness facility will open by the start of the school year in August. The residence hall is expected to be completed in the spring of 2019.
