Rockford Public Schools will soon start tearing down old school buildings, but first the district is going to try to find buried time capsules.
"I have been told that there have been time capsules buried here in the 50s, 60s and 80s," RPS 205 capital project manager James Dobyns said. "So, we were just looking for those time capsules."
On Tuesday, school officials were at Walker Elementary School.
They're using metal detectors and digging up anywhere they think a time capsule might be.
While they came up empty handed this week, they say they'll keep looking even during demolition.
"My direction here was somewhere around the flag pole, somewhere around the cornerstone around the old building, and somewhere around the old playground. That's a pretty wide area," Dobyns said. "We've walked almost the entire area."
The district says there are also time capsules at some other schools scheduled for demolition, including White Swan Elementary.
If you might know where a capsule is buried, please call the district at this number: 815-966-3000.
