The Rockford Police Department is now using drones to help investigate car crashes and crime.
Illinois Drone-One Inc. donated the drones, according to the police department. Rockford Police say the drones allow investigators to get video of serious crashes to help reconstruct the scene. The police department said this means better safety for investigators at the scene and traffic can open back up sooner after a crash.
The new drones are also used to map large crime scenes and provide information to investigators during or after a crime.
Rockford Police said it is following Federal Aviation Administration guidelines and all of the department's pilots are certified. The department has an FAA waiver, which allows it to use the drones at night.
