MADISON (WKOW) -- A UW-Madison medical student has been crowned Miss Madison.

Katarina Thuy-Dan Nguyen is a native of Lynnwood, Washington. The 23-year-old was selected as this year's Miss Madison-Capital City.

Nguyen is a first-time contestant in the Miss America pageant programs. For the talent portion of the pageant, she performed a musical number on the Vietnamese zither.

Nguyen is the first Vietnamese-American to win Miss Madison. She was crowned by McKenna Collins of Waunakee, who won Miss Madison in 2017 and is the reigning Miss Wisconsin 2017.

Nguyen will now compete in the Miss Wisconsin pageant June 16 in Oshkosh.

The first runner-up to Nguyen was Susan Fochs, 24, of Egg Harbor.
