Fred VanVleet named in Yahoo! Sports report alleging improper benefits

Former Auburn High School and Wichita State star Fred VanVleet has been implicated in an FBI investigation regarding improper benefits and possible NCAA violations in a report released Friday by Yahoo! Sports.

The report, which cites numerous documents and bank records obtained by Yahoo! Sports, shows VanVleet allegedly received at least $1,000 from ASM Sports, a prominent sports agency firm, while attending Wichita State. VanVleet, who currently plays for the NBA's Toronto Raptors, is currently represented by ASM.

In documents published by Yahoo! Sports, a balance sheet, dated Dec. 31, 2015, shows VanVleet's name under a "Loan to Players" heading. It lists a $1,070.00 balance next to his name.

In an expense report from February 2016, VanVleet's senior season at WSU, the document shows a cash advance of $803.00 to VanVleet. Another expense report from March of 2016 shows a $2,000.00 cash advance listed to Joe Danforth, Fred VanVleet's step-father and current assistant varsity basketball coach at Auburn High School in Rockford.

13 WREX did get in touch with VanVleet Friday morning, but he said he has no comment on the Yahoo! report.  We also reached out to Danforth for comment this morning but he declined to comment at this time.

VanVleet is one of numerous current and former college and professional players listed in the report.  Renowned programs like Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Michigan State are also named.

13 WREX will continue to follow this story throughout the day and we will continually be updating this story.
