UPDATE: Rockford Police have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was Hand Son.
It all started this morning when Son's car was spotted by Rockford Police near 10th Street and 12th Avenue. Officials say that they tried to reach Son by phone, but he refused to surrender.
Officials tried to perform a traffic stop at the 2500 block of S. 11th Street when Hand hit an unmarked police car and continued to drive off. Hand drove on the shoulder of the road before hitting a snow bank and overturning his vehicle.
As officers approached the vehicle, they heard a gunshot go off and found Hand Son inside the car with a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Son later died at a local hospital.
Rockford Police were on scene at a car crash early Thursday morning.
Officials have not provided any update on if there are any injuries, what led up to the crash, what time the crash occurred or if any other vehicles were involved.
South bound traffic on 11th Street was temporarily rerouted while officials were on scene.
