Twin brothers in Rockford celebrate their 16th birthdays by giving a gift—donating blood.
"I wouldn't have survived if I didn't get blood from people who donated so I just wanted to do the same thing that people did for me when I was born," Jakobe Chatman said.
He and his brother Jaheim both donated blood Monday at the Rock River Valley Blood Center after recently turning 16. The two say they were born prematurely and blood donations helped them survive. Jaheim says he and Jakobe are also doing it for his brother, who died in a drowning in 2015, and frequently donated blood.
"It was a good cause and I like to serve in my community," Jaheim said. "My brother did it in the past so I felt like it was a legacy that should keep on going on."
The brothers' mother Venus says she's a proud mother. Venus Chatman works at the blood center and encourages the teens to keep donating.
