13-year-old steals car in Rockford while girl was asleep in backseat

A 13-year-old Rockford boy is arrested and charged after police say he stole a car while a little girl was asleep in the backseat.

Rockford Police say it happened around 5:15 p.m. Monday at the Dollar General Store on South Alpine Road. A victim told police she left her car running and unlocked with her 8-year-old daughter inside sleeping when the suspect took it.

A few minutes later, police located the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Charles and 19th streets. After the traffic stop, the 13-year-old was taken in to custody. The 8-year-old girl, however, was not in the car anymore.

Police say she was dropped off at Alpine and Louisiana roads by the suspect. A citizen allowed the girl to use his cell phone and then transported her to another location to be reunited with family. The girl was unharmed.

A photo and name of the suspect will not be released because of the victim's age. Police say he's charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and conspiracy to commit auto theft.
