The Rockford Apartment Association is the latest local organization that announces it won't support home rule.
The organization said home rule would give city leaders expanded powers to increase taxes, raise fees and enact regulations that it currently doesn't have. The Rockford Apartment Association said other communities in Illinois with home rule have seen higher property taxes.
That despite Rockford city leaders implementing ordinances that would limit the power of home rule. The Finance and Personnel Committee voted Monday night to recommend approval of the ordinances that would require a majority vote to increase taxes, and allow voters to recall city leaders.
The Rockford Chamber of Commerce and the Rockford Area Economic Development Council approves home rule and said it will allow Rockford leader to make pro-small business decisions without Springfield.
