The United Way is making it a goal for students in our area to be successful in the classroom by the time they're six years old.
Today some of those students got help from a local union. The Northwestern Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council presented a check from donations that were collected on it's annual golf play day.
After the check presentation, members of the council read to pre-k students in hopes of helping them prepare for kindergarten.
"It's books going into the hands of children, what can you say negative about that? It's a great thing." said Gina Meeks, the labor engagement manager for United Way of Rock River Valley.
More than four thousand area students get to take part in the success by six program.
