Rockford Lutheran's cheerleading team brought home a fresh addition to the school's trophy case - the IHSA small cheer team state championship, won by the Crusaders in Bloomington.
Lutheran returned to their campus on a snowy Saturday to a big cheering crowd of family and friends, as the Crusaders won the school's first state title in any sport since 2009.
The Big Northern champs edged out Farmington by just 1.46 points in the small team standings to win the title, an emotional experience for all involved.
"When they walked off that mat, I think they knew, they knew they had given their best shot," said head coach Billie Makeever.
"I left my high school career the best way, I've done cheer for ten years, this is the best way I could've ended it," said senior Mia Scalise.
Lutheran's Big Northern neighbor North Boone placed seventh in the small team standings.
