Rockford Police say 26-year-old Brent Reed is behind bars following a traffic stop.
Investigators say they pulled Reed over near Charles and 22nd Street Friday night around 7:30. Officers say they noticed a Mitsubishi sedan with an expired registration. As the driver came to a stop, that's when police say Reed got out of the car and ran away. Rockford police and an off-duty Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy eventually caught up to him and took Reed into Custody.
Investigators say they found Reed with a handgun and is a convicted felon. The Winnebago County State's Attorney’s Office charged Reed with Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon and Resisting.
Police say the driver of the vehicle was identified as 18-year-old Rockford resident Dayton Huntley. He was issued a citation for Expired Registration and released. They also say a third male occupant was released without charge.
Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
