A group of veterans came together to honor a local WWII veteran who just passed away.
"I love having to honor Mr. Turner. I just don't like the circumstances we're honoring him in," said Walter Chimiak, a friend of Jesse Turner's.
The Honor Guard, Marines and members of the Navy came to pay their respects to Jesse Turner.
Turner served in the Navy during WWII. His services were at north park church of Christ in Machesney Park.
Many honored his memory, even if they didn't know him, because they say it's important to show respect for service members.
"We keep in touch with the people we welcome home. We don't just do a welcome home and leave. We keep in touch with these people because they're
just great people and there aren't that many left," said Chimiak.
Veterans say service members all the way from Indiana made it to Thursday's funeral.
