An unexpected surprise landed in a Salvation Army kettle in Winnebago County: a gold coin.
A 1-ounce Canadian fine gold coin dated 1988 was found wrapped in a $1 bill in a kettle at the Schnucks on Harlem Road in Loves Park. The coin has a face value of $50 though it is believed to be worth $1,200. The gift was given anonymously.
Donations collected in the Salvation Army kettles support the Christmas assistance program, a year-round food assistance and other social services programs.
