Rockford and Winnebago County aren't the first governing bodies to announce they will be filing a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies. In fact, hundreds of cities and counties around the nation have done so already.
Just in Illinois, Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, McHenry and Lake counties all filed lawsuits last month against several opioid manufacturers. The counties cited aggressive marketing of opioids that resulted in a rise in overdose rates.
Forty-one states, including Illinois, banded together earlier this year to subpoena more information from opioid companies to investigate the marketing. Attorney General Lisa Madigan reached a $4.5 million dollar settlement with a pharmaceutical company for deceptive marketing.
Back in 2015, Kentucky settled with the maker of OxyContin for $24 million.
