The first phase of construction at the soon-to-be Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center is officially underway, as Gorman & Company, Inc. and the City of Rockford closed on the building Thursday.
The $87.5 million development will transform the vacant Amerock building into a 160-room hotel and conference center.
City officials tell 13 WREX that some construction has just started and it will steadily increase in the coming weeks and months.
In a news release sent Thursday, the city says the development project is expected to create nearly 600 construction and permanent jobs.
The city says a groundbreaking is planned for the first quarter of 2018.
