The Marengo Lady Indians completed a 35-6 campaign with the ultimate prize - the 3-A state championship softball trophy. Marengo shut out East Peoria by a 2-0 margin to complete a title-winning season.
Reigning 13 WREX Athlete of the Week Mariah Dionne tossed a complete game shutout for Marengo, totaling seven strikeouts and yielding four hits. She walked 3, and got into some trouble in the bottom of the 7th inning when East Peoria put two in scoring position with two outs. A ten-pitch at-bat produced the final groundout to wrap up the championship. It was Dionne's 20th win of the year in the pitching circle.
Marengo's offense mustered just three hits against Alyssa Graves, who had 30 wins on the year prior to the state final. The Lady Indians scored twice in the sixth inning to hand their ace the lead.
This is the second state championship in Marengo softball history, ending their fifth trip to state in eleven seasons on a winning note.
