Marengo softball has turned state tournament appearances into a routine, and the Lady Indians continued that tradition with a 9-5 victory over St. Viator in the 3-A Kaneland Super-Sectional. It's Marengo's fifth trip to state in the last eleven seasons.
The two teams went back and forth in Maple Park - a 2-0 Marengo lead turned into a 3-2 St. Viator advantage, thanks to two Lady Lions home runs. The Lady Indians took a 4-3 lead, then fell behind again, 5-4.
Starting pitcher Mariah Dionne put the final exclamation point on a five-run Marengo sixth inning with a three-run home run. She then shut down the Lady Lions in the seventh inning to register the complete game start.
Marengo will face Nazareth Academy in the 3-A state semifinals in East Peoria on Friday at 12:30 pm.
