The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado struck Boone and McHenry counties during the intense Wednesday night severe thunderstorms. Any other damage that occurred with the storms was caused by severe thunderstorms wind gusts, at times topping 60 mph.

The tornado is rated as an EF-1, with maximum winds at 95 mph. The twister struck 2 miles south of Poplar Grove, moving northeast at nearly 60 mph. The path of the tornado was 10.3 miles long, passing by Capron and ending north of Harvard. Its width was 100 yards, and was on the ground for 13 minutes, starting at 10:21 pm.
