Police release surveillance photos of suspects in gas station carjacking

Rockford Police have released more information on a carjacking that took place at a gas station Wednesday afternoon.

Police say officers were called out to the On the Way gas station on Auburn Street around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a victim on the ground. Officers spoke with the 52-year-old victim, who they found disoriented and visibly battered. He sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The victim told police he was pumping gas into his SUV, a black GMC Yukon, when two men came up and attacked him, then stole his vehicle.

He says one suspect got in his SUV and drove away, while the other suspect got in a maroon van driven by another suspect and fled the scene.

Police have released surveillance video of the suspects and suspect vehicle that were obtained from a different gas station on Auburn Street that police say the suspects were at just before the carjacking.

Both suspects are African-American men in their late teens or early twenties. One suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, black running pants and a black baseball hat. The other suspect was wearing a white and gray shirt, puffy black vest and a red baseball hat.

Rockford Police detectives are continuing to investigate this incident. Police believe the victim of this crime was specifically targeted by the suspects and this was not a random act.

Anyone with information about this crime or the identity of the suspects is asked to contact the Rockford Police Department, 779-500-6551, or Crime Stoppers, 815-963-7867.
