The 13 News morning team has had burgers and tacos so far this month, and this week they tried another favorite for Where the Locals Eat.
Elliot, Morgan and Austin headed out to Greenfire in Rockford where they are dishing out wood fire pizzas that do not disappoint.
Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. But you could say that taste is worth a whole lot more.
That was definitely the case for the WREX morning team. It was love at first bite for Elliot, Morgan and Austin at Greenfire, where pizza is pleasing many hungry diners.
And it is no surprise fire is in the name, because this wood fired oven is where all the magic happens.
"It's a wood fire oven, so it's really all wood," says owner Shendet Ismajlaj. "There's no gas or anything."
While it may look like a small flame, this oven dishes out big flavor. The restaurant makes upwards of 300 pies per night.
The process to make these pizza, however, starts much earlier.
Ismajlaj says they start making dough early in the morning, then let it rest for three hours.
From there they shape the pies into flat circles before adding on the toppings.
It turns out the morning crews' taste for pizza varies a bit: Morgan is more for traditional meat and cheese, Austin likes a good supreme and Elliot like to try anything new.
As it turns out, Greenfire has got everyone covered, with margarita, Hawaiian, meat butcher, duck bacon, chicken pesto pizzas and more.
"If guests like it, we'll put it on the menu," Ismajlaj says.
Whatever toppings you decide on, once the pie makes its way into the oven, it is a relatively short process, good for those extra-hungry diners.
"The pizza is done in less than five minutes," Ismajlaj says.
Elliot, Morgan and Austin dined on margarita, spinach artichoke and chicken pesto pizzas, and they loved each of them.
Greenfire is located at 6795 East Riverside Blvd. in Rockford. They are open Monday - Friday from 11 a.m. until midnight and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. The Kitchen is open until midnight every day.
