Teacher of the Week: Brad Carlson - Guilford High

Brad Carlson - Guilford High Brad Carlson - Guilford High

Brad Carlson takes the extra time and makes the extra effort for his students at Guilford High School.

The Special Education teacher has been at the school fro the past 12 years. It's a place where his passion lives.

"Special needs kids, my heart has a passion for those types of kids," Carlson says. "It might not be the easiest but when you get a calling that's just what you do."

It may not be the easiest job, but day after day, Brad makes it look easy to colleagues.

"One of the biggest keys is making connections with the kids and he does a really good job at that," says Brett Vosburgh, Special Education Administrator at Guilford. "He makes sure the kids know he cares about them now and he cares about their future."

Carlson focuses on the lessons in the book, but he also cares about the lessons in life, like being a positive influence for students.

"I think if maybe they can have that one teacher that they can look forward coming into class. A teacher can make their day with one simple comment," he says.

It is an impact that he is having on students like freshman Jabari Floyd, who has seen himself become more of a leader after being in Mr. Carlson's class.

"I get the help that I need," Jabari says. "Instead of me being the class clown, instead of being a follower, I can be a leader. I am a leader. I'm doing good and that's what he showed me."

Brewing success in his students, it is a fuel that feeds Brad's passion for teaching.

"I love it. I love it. Getting a chance to work with kids every day. I enjoy doing it. I'm a lucky man. Let's put it that way," Carlson says.
