13 WREX wins two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including top prize for Overall Excellence

13 WREX has been awarded two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the top honor of Overall Excellence.  The other award was for News Documentary.  This is the second straight year 13 WREX has won both of these awards.

The awards were announced Tuesday morning by the Radio Television Digital News Association.  The Edward R. Murrow Awards recognize outstanding achievement in electronic journalism.

The Overall Excellence category recognizes a station for the totality of its journalistic efforts, including breaking news, continuing coverage, weather, sports, community service and digital media, among others. 13 WREX’s submission included work from its hour-long special on the one year anniversary of the April 9, 2015 tornadoes, a four-part series on violent crime in Rockford, as well as the three major community service events the station hosted in 2016.

The News Documentary category recognizes a program or segment that addresses a need or needs of the community.  13 WREX was recognized in this category for its aforementioned one hour special, “Out of the Storm: 1 Year Later.” This program aired on April 9, 2016 on the one year anniversary of the deadly tornado outbreak that killed two women in Fairdale. The special included never-before-seen video of the storm as well as stories from survivors who continued to piece their lives back together one year later.

"To be honored with these two awards for the second straight year is such a testament to our staff’s continued hard work and talent,” 13 WREX News Director Josh Morgan said. “We have a team of journalists that work so hard at providing our area the best content day in and day out. These awards are a tribute to their dedication and passion for their work.”

This marks the third straight year that 13 WREX has been honored with two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.  Both regional awards will now advance to the national competition and will be judged against winners from other regions across the country.  Winners of the national competition will be announced in early June.
