Rockford condemns Clock Tower due to lack of electricity

The City of Rockford says the Clock Tower has been condemned.

City officials say the property was condemned as a result of the facility having no electricity. The city says the lack of power resulted in the failure of the emergency alarm systems, as well as other components critical for the safe use of the building.

The city says the building's power was disconnected due to a lack of payment. They say if power to the building is restored, the city will work with property owners to have the condemnation lifted.

As of Friday afternoon, the phone for Tilted Kilt, which operated out of the Clock Tower, was disconnected and the Rockford location has been removed from their corporate website. WREX has reached out to Tilted Kilt for comment.

It has been a rough few months for the historic Rockford location.

Last fall, five people were shot and one person was killed when a fight broke out at the Clock Tower. Shortly after that, city inspectors found code violations and ordered them to be fixed.

A short time later, the owners of the resort announced it would be shutting down during the winter to make improvements and bring the building up to code.

More recently, some area lawmakers have floated the idea of a casino opening up on the property
