April is national donate life month and that has a special meaning for one Rockford nurse.
Bobbi Smith works at Mercyhealth, and 20 years ago she lost two granddaughters who needed liver transplants.
According to Mercyhealth, more than 5,000 people in Illinois are waiting for an organ donation. When Smith's daughter, Carrie, passed away 15 years ago, she chose to donate life and helped 15 people with her tissue.
"The gift that we got because of the gifts that Carrie was able to donate are just everything to us," Smith said. "To know that Carrie lives on in others."
Smith started the Red Shoe Run, a local race to raise money and awareness for organ and tissue donation.
