Boylan's girls basketball team currently owns the top spot in the NIC-10 standings. They're playing for much more this year as their point guard stares down medical obstacles much like she stares down an opponent on the hardwood. The Lady Titans cheered her up on Saturday, spending their day in Santa hats and singing Christmas carols in their teammate's hospital room.
Familiar tunes sung by a team full of smiles, for a teammate battling off the court.
"When one of us is down, we're all there to support them, we knew Frankie was having this treatment today and we wanted to be there for her," said Sarah Welsh.
Boylan's Frankie Schiro is fighting a chronic internal disease, and got a lift during a Saturday hospital visit.
"I knew that my struggle is going to be hard, with my teammates and family here to support me, it's been nice," Schiro said.
It hasn't been easy for the Lady Titans. Tears flowed amidst raw emotions, but Frankie is grateful to taste the spirit of the season.
"I didn't know if I was going to be able to play again and so to have them here and do fun things and to share Christmas spirit with kids here in the hospital, it's been really fun."
Just a few rooms down the hall, they shared their songs and an early round of gifts with nine-year old Matt and his two siblings.
It's cold outside, but inside these walls, everyone enjoyed the warmth of giving joy to others.
