Beginning Tuesday the Rock River Valley Blood Center will now have the ability to test for the Zika virus.
The test will be added to the battery of laboratory screenings for infectious diseases in donated blood.
The test for Zika is being implemented as an Investigational New Drug (IND). The addition of this test will eliminate the need for donors to be questioned about travel to Zika endemic areas such as Florida.
Jennifer Bowman of the Rock River Valley Blood Center says they want to make sure that patients who receive a blood transfusion will fell confident that they are safe.
Back in August, the FDA released revised guidelines recommending universal testing of donated Whole Blood and blood components for Zika virus in the U.S. and its territories. Since that time, the RRVBC has been working with a test manufacturer and the FDA to implement these guidelines.
The blood center says they did the same thing with adding a test for the West Nile Virus.
