Cross Country, Tennis, Golf highlight busy Saturday

The eighth week of Friday Night Football served as an appetizer to a busy Saturday of high school athletics in Northern Illinois.

Rock Cut State Park kicked off the proceedings, hosting the 2016 NIC-10 cross country meet. Belvidere North captured both the boys and girls team trophies, highlighted by Jenna Lutzow's first place finish in the varsity girls race, and Alec Scott placing second in the boys race.

Boylan's Delaney Appino and Grace McLaughlin placed second and third in the girls race, respectively. East's Jared Van Barriger won the boys race for the E-Rabs.

Harlem was originally scheduled to host the girls tennis sectionals, but the gloomy weather opened the door to move inside, thanks to Boylan's accommodations. Guilford's Nicole Christiansen defeated Hononegah's Reagan Wells in the singles finals, while Belvidere North's duo of Leraaen Abbott and Kayla Vittore win the doubles final against Hononegah's Winnie Louh and Erin Zanolla. The Lady Indians win the team sectional title.

The IHSA boys and girls golf state finals featured an Ogle County repeat - the Byron boys team captured its second straight 1-A team title, while senior Trent Snodgrass, a former WREX Athlete of the Week, won the top individual honor at state.

Winnebago's Marcus Smith and Stockton's Alex Staver carded top ten scores in the 1-A finals.

The 1-A girls state finals saw Rockford Lutheran win the bronze as a team, while Natalie Hooper had the fourth-best individual score. Boylan's Jesse Slattery and Dixon's Olivia Pultorak finished in the top ten in the individual ranks.
