Saturday Local Sports - Golf, Swimming, Flag Football

It was a busy Saturday on the first day of October in the Rockford region for local sports - golf, swimming, and flag football highlighted the start of the new month.

The NIC-10 boys golf tournament's final round delivered a thriller on the back nine between Hononegah's Varun Menon and Harlem's Austin Young. Menon trailed Young by one stroke heading into the last day of play, and tied Young with a birdie on the par-three 17th hole going to the last par-four at Atwood Homestead Golf Course. Menon's par putt on 18 lipped out, while Young, the reigning Boys City Classic champion, drilled his par offering to clinch first place individually in the conference. Menon's rally helped clinch the team championship for Hononegah.

The two Rockford PRO/AM Alpine Bank team members went putt for putt in a terrific round.

Jefferson hosted its annual J-Hawk Swim Invitational on Saturday, which saw McHenry win the meet while the Belvidere Co-Op placed second.

The Rockford Park District's youth flag football program will send a team of young players to Soldier Field on Sunday, where they'll play at halftime of the Chicago Bears-Detroit Lions game. They got a tuneup round at Auburn's Wyeth Stadium on Saturday during a Rockford Police Department vs Winnebago County charity flag football game.
