Freeport graduate and Western Illinois running back Steve McShane set the tone for the Leathernecks in DeKalb as they hung on to beat Northern Illinois, 28-23. The win sends WIU to a 3-0 start while NIU drops to 0-4, going winless in non-conference games this season.
McShane accounted for 123 all-purpose yards (80 rushing, 43 receiving) and scored the game's first touchdown, an 11-yard carry that propelled the Leathernecks to an early 28-7 lead.
The Huskies offense scored 16 unanswered points to close the gap and make the Leathernecks sweat it out, but NIU's offense stalled late in the 4th quarter to seal the loss.
Ryan Graham and Anthony Maddie split duties at quarterback, with each throwing a touchdown pass for NIU. Jordan Huff rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies.
