Hundreds of people spent their Labor Day competing on the basketball court.
The 4th annual Hoopstars Basketball Tournament was held Monday at Davis Park in Rockford. The 3-on-3 tournament was free of charge for kids who typically couldn't afford to play.
Organizer, State Senator Steve Stadelman, says the tournament did something new this year: people were encouraged to bring their gently used basketball shoes to the game to donate.
"Bring these shoes to the tournament and they'll be distributed to low-income families across the area," Stadelman said. "It's a way to kind of give back to the community, having some fun with basketball but also working for a good cause and making sure needy kids have good athletic shoes as well."
Organizers say since the event started in 2013, the tournament has quadrupled in size.
