Man Gets 7 Years For Machesney Park Bar Fight

The man involved in a Machesney Park bar fight that ended in another man's death has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

The Winnebago County State’s Attorney's Office announced that Matthew Duncan, 32, was sentenced Tuesday afternoon. He was found guilty of aggravated Battery after a jury trial in June.

According the the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, officers were called to Legends Bar in the 600 block of Superior Avenue in Machesney Park in January 2014. When police arrived they found Michael Eash, 40, unresponsive. Eash later died at the hospital.

Police say Duncan pushed Eash, who fell down and hit his head on the ground. Eash was pronounced dead at the hospital a few weeks later.

Duncan was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, but was only found guilty on the aggravated battery charge during his June trial.

Aggravated Battery is a Class 3 Felony that is normally punishable by two to five years in prison, but because of Duncan's prior criminal history he was eligible for a longer sentence. Duncan must also complete one year of probation after his release.
