The baseball and softball playoffs continued with championships on the line throughout the region on Saturday, with local teams advancing to Super-Sectionals in the 1-A and 2-A brackets, and the sectional round in the 3-A and 4-A postseasons.
1-A baseball featured Aquin winning its first ever sectional championship as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Dakota and won 7-3 at River Ridge. They now face Somonauk at Benedictine University in Lisle in the 1-A Super-Sectional on Memorial Day.
2-A baseball sent Lutheran and Stillman Valley to Morrison for the sectional crown, and the Crusaders used a strong start from Johnny Sanchez, as well as a leadoff home run from the righty, in a 3-1 victory. Lutheran advances to the 2-A Super-Sectional at Augustana College in Rock Island against Macomb on Monday. The photograph of the Crusaders and their latest trophy is courtesy of Abby Woollacott.
2-A softball brought better luck to Stillman Valley - the Lady Cardinals cruised past Morrison on their home diamond, winning 13-0 in six innings to get to the 2-A Super-Sectional in East Peoria on Monday against Rockridge.
The 3-A regional finals in Belvidere brought Rockford Christian and Boylan together, with the Royal Lions using a flurry of home runs to pick up a 16-2 victory in five innings. Last year's 2-A state champions advance to the sectional semfinals against Marmion Academy in Rochelle on Wednesday.
4-A regional championship action saw Harlem lose to Jacobs at Belvidere North by a 3-0 score, and Hononegah lose to Huntley at Guilford by a 4-3 decision in five rain-shortened innings.
