Boone County Board members have voted to send a letter of opposition to state transportation officials regarding a controversial rail project that would impact several properties in the county.
Karl Johnson, of District 2, said the board overwhelming approved sending a letter they'd put together at a retreat a week ago. He said there were two different letters that both said the same thing, but they voted on one with a certain format.
"It's the intent of the board to send additional materials to the Surface Transportation Board detailing why our concerns exist," said Johnson. "We are also offering at least one alternative route using existing rail that's in Northern Illinois."
According to the Great Lakes Basin Transportation website, "The purpose of the new railroad is to expedite freight movements across the nation and to provide additional capacity for growing railroad traffic."
Johnson said the county administrator has been asked to put together the letter and have it submitted by the deadline June 15.
