Officials from Freeport School District say students will have the opportunity to have free breakfast and lunch thanks to a federal program.

The district was accepting in to the Community Eligibility Provision, a four-year program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture that helps schools who participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs. Freeport schools join Rockford Public Schools, who are also a part of the program.

“Children that are well fed are better able to focus in class and, ultimately, do better in school,” said Amanda Williams, FSD Director of Food Service. “We look forward to seeing the ways this opportunity will increase our ability to educate every student in the Freeport School District.”

Officials say that students will be able to receive one reimbursable breakfast and one lunch every day. Students can still purchase extra items at a cost.

The program means that district parents will not need to fill out a free and reduced application at school registration for the next school year.

Parents or guardians will be able to request a refund of remaining funds on their childrens' accounts at the end of the school year. However, parents can decide to retain those funds on the account for future use. Any negative balances will remain on the students' accounts, according to officials.
